Coffee plantation at sunrise — one of Hearthstone's partner farms

Who We Are

Our Story

A small shop with a big belief: that a cup of coffee can change lives — the farmer's, the barista's, and yours.

How It Started

A Kitchen Table, a Dream, and a Very Good Cup of Coffee

Hearthstone Coffee started in 2014 when our founders, Maya and Daniel, came back from a trip to Ethiopia with a suitcase full of green coffee beans and a conviction that the coffee industry could do better.

They'd spent three weeks visiting farms in the Yirgacheffe region — watching families harvest by hand, tasting coffee at the source, and learning how little of what people paid at a café ever made it back to the people who grew it. They came home changed.

They started roasting in their garage. They sold bags at the farmers market. They saved up, found a little space on Ember Lane, and opened Hearthstone Coffee in November 2014 with six tables, one espresso machine, and a handwritten menu on a chalkboard.

Ten years later, the chalkboard is still there. So are the values.

What We Stand For

These aren't marketing words. They're the decisions we make every day.

Ethically Sourced

Every bean we buy comes from farms that pay fair wages, protect the land, and invest in their communities.

Relationship Coffee

We visit our partner farms in person every year. These aren't transactions — they're friendships built over years.

Global Roots

Our beans travel from Ethiopia, Colombia, and Guatemala. Each origin brings a distinct flavor story to your cup.

Small-Batch Roasted

We roast in small batches at our downtown roastery, just two blocks away. Fresh beans, every single week.

The Roastery

Roasted Two Blocks Away

We roast all our own beans at Hearthstone Roastery on Cedar Street — small batches, twice a week, on a 15-kilo drum roaster we've had since year one.

Small-batch roasting means we can be precise. We dial in each origin differently — lighter roasts for the bright Ethiopian naturals, medium for the Colombian washed, a touch darker for our house espresso blend.

The beans in your cup were roasted within the last seven days. That's a promise we take seriously.

Our Farm Partners

These are the people behind every cup. We're proud to call them partners — and friends.

Yirgacheffe Cooperative

Ethiopia · Partner since 2016

A 200-family cooperative in the birthplace of coffee. Their washed process produces the bright, floral notes you taste in our pour overs.

Finca La Esperanza

Huila, Colombia · Partner since 2018

A third-generation family farm at 1,800 meters elevation. Their natural process beans carry notes of dark fruit and brown sugar.

Cooperativa Huehuetenango

Guatemala · Partner since 2020

A women-led cooperative producing some of the most complex coffees in Central America. Bright acidity, caramel sweetness.
